Article highlights:

  • LabLeaders past and present have a lot to teach us about elevating the value of labs in the changing landscape of healthcare
  • Paying attention to what they say can prepare us to get out of the lab and take action in new ways
  • It’s okay to have an eggnog every now and then

One late night in the lab...

DR NEZER:
Eh, don't tell me to get out of the lab! Who wants to stimulate collaboration over a random eggnog?!? Not me—bah humbug!

DR NEZER:
Wha—wha—who goes there?!?

GHOST OF LABORATORIANS PAST:
You know me…I am the ghost of laboratorians past.

I had one main focus—clinical excellence. By running my tests, delivering accurate results, and going about my lab operations, I added value as an agent of the laboratory industry.

But then….

GHOST OF LABORATORIANS PRESENT:
…I came along, the ghost of laboratorians present.

In my world, the lab is the epicenter of opportunity, and we consult with clinicians all the time!

Laboratory data are fully integrated in EMRs and are the source of sound clinical decisions that measure and improve patient outcomes—and my lab's bottom line.

Today, I create value as an agent of laboratory medicine. So don't be such a cranky ClinPath, Eb! Your future's so bright, I gotta wear shades!!!

DR NEZER:
Wow, there sure is a lot for me to do and be hopeful about. Right after the holidays, I'm getting out of the lab and going for a mile-long walk in a hospital colleague's shoes!

Pour me a glass of that 'nog...

And let's have a toast to LabLeaders past … and present!!!
